In February 2016, EUPATI UK Trainee Noirin O’Neill published an article entitle “The expert patient” in the BMJ – Evidence Based Nursing. April 2016 | volume 19 | number 2 | 41. A copy can be found here.
At 30 years of age Noirin was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia – an aggressive and rapidly fatal haemorrhaging disease if not correctly diagnosed and treated immediately. It is a rare disease which affects one in a million people in Europe. After successful treatment, Noirin sought to share her personal experience of medicines research and development with others and she became a patient advocate at the national level. Since completing the 14-month EUPATI Patient Expert Training Course and becoming a EUPATI Fellow in 2015, Noirin is now an enthusiastic and active patient expert both at home and abroad. Originally from Northern Ireland, Noirin now lives in Sligo and details of her patiend education and involvement experience can be found here.
